Max Benitz is a British writer, journalist, screenwriter and former actor, born on 14 March 1985 in London. He first attracted public attention as a child actor, later built a career in journalism and wrote a well-regarded book on the British Army in Afghanistan, and has since moved into screenwriting and television production. He is also publicly known as the former partner of actress Olga Kurylenko and the father of her son Alexander.
From Child Actor to Midshipman Calamy
Benitz made his most notable acting appearance in Peter Weir’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), the acclaimed naval epic starring Russell Crowe. He played Midshipman Calamy, one of the young officers aboard HMS Surprise. The film was a major production, nominated for ten Academy Awards, which gave Benitz considerable early visibility despite his relatively small role.

This period of embedded reporting resulted in his book, Six Months Without Sundays: The Scots Guards in Afghanistan, published by Birlinn. The book covers the Scots Guards’ tour of duty in Helmand province and offers a close-up account of soldiers in one of the conflict’s most difficult theatres. The Times described it as unusually well written — a notable compliment for a first book by a relatively young author. The book stands as Benitz’s most substantial independent public achievement to date and marked him out as a serious non-fiction writer rather than simply a former child actor with a journalism side project.
Writing, Producing and Work in Film and Television
After his journalism work, Benitz moved into the film and television industry in a different capacity. He joined Ingenious, a media financing company, where he worked across film and television development, financing and executive producing. The role gave him a commercial and creative grounding in how screen projects are structured and funded.
He has since transitioned to full-time screenwriting, with commissions for original dramas including Diva and Villa Paz in the UK, and Convictions in the United States. He is described as a writer and executive producer working with clients in both Britain and America.

Benitz and Ukrainian-born French actress Olga Kurylenko were in a relationship for a period and kept much of their personal life out of the public eye. They have one son together, Alexander, whose full name has been reported as Alexander Max Horatio. He was born on 3 October 2015. Kurylenko and Benitz did not regularly appear together at public events, and the couple are now former partners.
